In the poverty of a developing country such as Nepal where leprosy is endemic, sufferers are thought to have the disease as a punishment from the gods. It thrives in mankind without killing its victims whilst to their companions they become more and more grotesque. Leprosy physically disables people and makes them destitute, furthering their isolation from any normal society.

In response to encountering this appalling suffering, Maggie Burgess, an ex-nurse from Canada, established Promise Nepal in 2000. Since then she has set up the Sewa Kendra project which;
• Cured 862 last year
• Has a free general out-patient clinic
   treating approximately 17,000 patients a year;
• Has a facility for 26 in-patients -
  10 of whom are permanent residents;
• A workshop facility providing work and income for 1800
   cured patients who can not return home;
• Has a nursery and day-care center with scholarship
   schemes for children of workers in the workshop.
